This latest volume completes the three volumes on the famous stained-glass windows in Gouda and deals with the windows executed in the ateliers of Dirck and Wouter Crabeth. Between 1555 and 1572 these two brothers completed fourteen windows for Sint Jan's ambulatory, transept and nave.
About the series
This long-awaited work offers a detailed discussion of the stained-glass windows of the Sint Janskerk at Gouda in three richly illustrated volumes. The windows of the Sint Janskerk constitute the most important ensemble of sixteenth-century stained glass in the Netherlands, and it is the only church in the country in which the original glazing, from the period 1555-1604 produced after the fire of 1552, is preserved in its entirety. Moreover, the clerestory of the choir incorporates even earlier glass, dating from c.1530-1540, which counts as the oldest stained glass in situ in the Netherlands.
In this Dutch contribution to the international Corpus Vitrearum series, the Gouda windows and their cartoons are subjected to a serious scholarly investigation for the first time. The Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi operates under the patronage of the Union Académique Internationale (UAI) and of the Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art (CIHA). Its primary goal is to study and publish the patrimony of stained glass of the Middle Ages in each country, a task that is being carried out by national committees.
